 2008_memorial_day_poster.jpg

Saturday, May 24th, the sleepy field nestled between the Chattahoochee River and the sloping wall of the Berkeley Lake Dam will become the site of Berkeley Lake’s “Operation Huey Rides”. As a tribute to American Service Personnel throughout the decades, the City of Berkeley Lake, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Reserve and the Georgia Defense Force, will support this veteran tribute.

RE-ENACTMENT
With special emphasis on those who served in Southeast Asia, the day begins at 10:30AM with a short Vietnam reenactment featuring Army Aviation's "Comanchero", a UH1-D Huey helicopter that flew combat operations in Vietnam. Taking part on the ground will be Vietnam War re-enactors in full dress and equipments, conducting a ground assault against an enemy position.

RIDES
Immediately following the re-enactment, residents of Berkeley Lake, and sponsored guests will have the opportunity to a ride in "Comanchero" to tour the city and much of the surrounding area. The tickets are $50.00 per ride.  In addition to the rides, the U.S. Army Reserve will bring out the Army Climbing Wall, the Army H3 Hummer, a Virtual Reality M16 Battle Rifle Challenge, and a Dog Tag Making Machine. Various other military exhibits are planned.

LOCATION
The main events will be held in 'Providence Field' between the Chattahoochee River and N. Berkeley Lake Road, just west of River District. This field, once part of the Henderson Sod Farm, has been generously made available by Mr. John Collins. The landing zone portion of the field has been named ”LZ Hamilton” in honor of the late Lt. Col. Edward S. Hamilton, U.S.M.A. 1939, Battalion Commander, 90th Inf. Div., WWII.

PARKING

Persons parking in the Chapel/City Hall will have the option to ride to the beach area in privately owned pontoon boats, where they will have walking access to the Landing Zone. Parking for the event will not be allowed in the River District area, or along North Berkeley Lake Road. This will be strictly enforced by military personnel and law enforcement.
