This committee will have two co-chairs in 2008 who will work cooperatively but provide leadership in separate directions. Mary English, who has received full CERT training and is well qualified in that regard, will focus on recruiting volunteers and getting them some training, along the lines of an abbreviated CERT training. Shawn Cochran will continue to work on a risk-management assessment.
The Council Liaison to the Committee is Tom Kitchens.
The BLEMA (Berkeley Lake Emergency Management Agency) mission is to protect life, property and critical city infrastructure from all types of hazards through emergency management, preparedness, response and recovery. Emergency planning ranges from snow removal to major disasters.
Berkeley Lake Emergency Management Agency was formed 1998 to provide local support and direction in advance of and during natural and man made disasters which threaten the well being of life and property in the city of Berkeley Lake. Volunteers are recruited and trained to address emergency situations and work in conjunction with the Emergency Management Agency of Gwinnett County.
The Berkeley Lake Emergency Management Agency (BLEMA) is a proactive group of volunteers within the City of Berkeley Lake. Their function is to assist Berkeley Lake residents in times of emergency. Each neighborhood in our community has designated BLEMA representatives.
2008 Tasks as charged by Mayor Salter: The committee will review the City-approved plan from the County and the plan received from PrepareFirst, to make any helpful suggestions to Council regarding them. Charlie Carroll, former chairperson, will continue to coordinate with the county’s emergency management personnel. He has agreed to represent us in their Emergency Operations Center should the need arise. We need to educate our local group and refine the list of volunteers by making sure they all know exactly what to do in an emergency. This group is very critical to our welfare in times of crisis (tornadoes, ice storms, hazardous spills, acts of terrorism, etc.). Help to coordinate with FEMA and GEMA, and various law enforcement agencies, both in planning for and in response to actual emergencies. Provide whatever education in preparedness we may need and assure that BLEMA’s response organization (phone trees, etc.) is inclusive of all neighborhoods. Supervise and maintain emergency equipment and make recommendations regarding additional needs. Please also review the areas on city roads that were previously identified as particular hazards in snow and ice for possible revision. I have arranged that Greg Harris will maintain bags of ice-removal material at all times on his property for our use.
