The Berkeley Lake Conservancy (BLC) is the environmental planning group. They manage City-owned greenspace and recreation areas. The BLC also assists in applying for funds from federal, state, or local public or quasi-public agencies and to expend such funds as the Council may direct and authorize by resolution.

The Committee Chair for 2008 is Pete Westafer.

The Council Liaison to the Committee is Rebecca Spitler.

2008 Tasks as charged by Mayor Salter: Several efforts have been made by previous Conservancy groups to create a draft site management plan for our greenspace.  Please review previous efforts and make any desired changes.  Ultimately the plan should be submitted to Council, which will take whatever action they think best and then send it on to GOLT.  The existing path in the greenspace still needs to be monitored regularly for possible erosion.  Previous groups have studied this thoroughly with the state forester, Dale Higdon, and they concluded that so far it is not in need of intervention.  The only major problem at this point is privet, an invasive plant, which needs to be removed to protect other flora.  Please consider the best way to accomplish this.  Ongoing goals include: to generally supervise our buffer areas, greenspaces, and park and to explore and pursue possible additional areas in our city that could be permanently protected as greenspace.  Lobby owners toward that end, and, if successful, assist them with easement creation.   Explore possible grants for funding related to any Conservancy activities.  Conduct and coordinate activities that maintain our status as a Tree City.  This includes planting some trees somewhere in the City at least yearly and photographing it.  Arbor Day is in February, which is a good time to transplant trees, but we have historically done it at various times.  Routinely visit protected areas to ensure their well-being and report findings.  Our Ordinance Enforcement Officer will be walking the greenspace and reporting to me routinely as well.
