The City of Berkeley Lake requires that septic systems are regularly inspected and pumped at intervals of not more than five years by a licensed contractor registered with the Gwinnett County Health Department. The homeowner is responsible for notifying City Hall on forms provided by the City that the required service has been performed. Failure to service septic systems or failure to report the servicing of septic systems is cause for enforcement action to be taken. See Chapter 58 of the City Code for the regulations pertaining to servicing of septic systems.

Failure to maintain septic systems in proper working order can result in adverse environmental impacts such as degraded water quality. Here are some tips for maintaining a functional septic system: repair leaky faucets and toilets, run only full loads of laundry and dishes, do not pour oil or grease down the drain, and do not drive or park cars over the tank or drain fields.
